Joaquin Phoenix returned to The Late Show with David Letterman tonight to apologize to Dave for his behavior from his infamous interview back in February 2009.
During his appearance in 2009, Phoenix sat across from Letterman with an unkempt beard, mumbling and somewhat disoriented through the awkward interview. We learned last week that Phoenix was playing a character for his friend Casey Affleck’s faux documentary I’m Still Here (click here for the trailer).
Tonight Phoenix said to Letterman, “I mean, I think that you’ve interviewed many, many people and I assumed that you would know the difference between a character and a real person,” the actor said to the late-night host. “I hope I didn’t offend you in any way.”
Popular VideoThis young teenage singer was shocked when Keith Urban invited her on stage at his concert. A few moments later, he made her wildest dreams come true.
“Oh, no. Oh, no, no, no,” Letterman said. “I’m telling you, it was so much fun. It was batting practice, you know what I mean? Every one of them was a dinger. I was looking for a beat down, and I got one… I want to thank you for that.”
Some believed Letterman was in on the hoax, but that seems to be untrue, ”Was there a script that you and I were working with?” Letterman asked Phoenix, who responded immediately: “No.”
Below is a clip from tonight’s show. The video from the original interview is below that.
