James Franco: "I Don’t Care if I Bomb as Oscar Host"

Actor James Franco on why he signed up for next year’s big Oscar-hosting gig: Well, why not?

It was recently announced that Milk star Franco will be co-hosting the Academy Awards alongside Anne Hathaway.

A surprise selection according to some, but as it turns out nobody was more surprised than Franco at being offered the role.

Franco spoke to EW about his hosting gig, and what made him take the plunge after a chat with Oscar producer Bruce Cohen.

When he [Cohen] asked me to host, I was very, very surprised, and my initial reaction was ‘No’. Then I thought about it and I thought, ‘Well, why not?’ Because I’ll look bad? Well, I don’t care,” revealed Franco.

Franco – a very likely Best Actor nominee – said that his handlers strongly advised him to say no.

“When we finally met and discussed it in person, all my representatives were saying, ‘No! Of course not!’” Franco said.

“So that always sparks something in me. So I said, ‘Yes, of course!’ Because that reaction that they have is based on conventional wisdom of what makes a good career. And that can be boring — really boring.”

He also said he’s as cool as a cucumber about the gig.

“I’m front and center, but … I feel confident,” he said.

And even if it’s a disaster, he said he won’t dwell on it.

“I’m happy to take the criticism. Even if it’s ‘The Worst Oscars Ever,’ I don’t care. It’s one night of the year.”

What do you make of Franco and Hathaway as co-hosts?
