The nation's number one cigarette smoker has finally kicked the habit.
"Yes, he has," said First Lady Michelle Obama when asked Tuesday if the president has stopped smoking. "It's been almost a year," she added, offering no details on exactly when or how he quit.
Obama's habit has been the source of discussion and speculation since he started running for president in 2007. He promised his wife he would quit smoking if she agreed to let him enter the race.
"I hate it," Michelle Obama told CBS' "60 Minutes" early in the campaign. "That's why he doesn't do it anymore, I'm proud to say. I outed him — I'm the one who outed him on the smoking."

However, he didn't quit then. In June 2009, the last time the president addressed the issue publicly, he admitted that he still occasionally sneaks a cigarette.
"I constantly struggle with it," the president said at the time. "Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes? Yes. Am I a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No.
"Once you've gone down this path, then it's something you continually struggle with."
Then in December the issue came up again, when White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said he hadn't seem Obama smoke "in probably nine months."

Mrs. Obama said she did not ask her husband how he quit. "When somebody's doing the right thing you don't mess with them," she said. However, Obama has used nicotine gum in the past. In fact, during the campaign there was also a supply of gum on hand to control urges.
However it happened, the president is now a former smoker, and his wife is proud. "He's always wanted to stop," she said.
