If you are gay, the Christian right believe you shouldn't adopt, or have rights

| by Jerome McCollom

O.K., what is with the far Christian right-wing obsession with gays? They really don't like them. A Jim Garlow, on the radio show of James Dobson, stated:

"Isn't it interesting that the African Americans that were brought here against their will, coercively, in bondage, in chains, in a horrific experience called slavery. They were forced here and they end up being in state by state, many cases, what has saved us from the bondage and enslavement that would come upon us if gay marriage actually passed in a state. California being a prime example where the African Americans saved us from the bondage we would have faced."

First of all, those who were the biggest supporters of slavery, were by and large, the direct ancestors of those who are now the biggest opponents of equality for gay men and women. They were the biggest opponents of the right of women to vote also. They hold a region of our nation captive with their ultra fundamentalist religious beliefs, that being of course, the American South. I hope for the day when that section of our great nation isn't beholden to the myths of a 2000 year old book.

Second, the idea that gays and lesbians having fully equality and due process to marry the person that they love, is the same as someone putting chains on your wrists, put in boat and taken across a vast ocean and forced to pick cotton or tobacco, is absurd. Nobody has a right to ensure someone else can't enjoy happiness, because they don't like the sexual orientation of that person. Rights don't consist of restricting the freedom of someone who, to quote Thomas Jefferson, does not "pick my pocket nor break my leg."

Rick Santorum, wannabe President of the United States, does not believe  gay couples should be able to adopt. He though also believes, it is perfectly o.k. for states to lock up gay adult men, for consensual sex. He occupies a wing of the Republican party, the homophobic wing. It is up to Republicans to take their party back from these bigots.
