Humane Society Deploys Own "SWAT" Unit for Animals in Danger
By Wayne Pacelle
Katrina was a wake-up call to The HSUS and to the rest of the animal protection movement that we had to amp up our disaster response
capabilities. From that point forward, I thought we needed a capability
to respond not only to natural disasters, but also human-caused crises,
such as puppy mills, hoarders, or animal fighting operations.
Last year, under the direction of Emergency Services director Scotlund Haisley, we had more than 40 deployments—one every nine days. And the pace is just as brisk this year.
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about our intervention in Nebraska to save 200 starving horses, with nearly half of the horses going to our Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch. During this last week, we've had two more.
Yesterday we helped to rescue nearly 400 American Eskimo dogs from a puppy mill in Washington state,
where the dogs had been living in deplorable conditions, confined to
shopping carts and rusty cages caked with waste. And last week we
assisted in the seizure of 374 neglected animals—dogs, horses, exotic birds, rabbits and more—from a ranch in Wisconsin, resulting in criminal animal cruelty charges being filed against the property owner.
In addition to strengthening our disaster response capacity, we've been expanding our presence in the states. We now have staff in 33 states, and we plan on covering every state as soon as resources allow.
Our
state directors give us a leg up in learning of crisis situations and
then allowing us to coordinate with local law enforcement agencies and
local and national animal welfare groups. Many of these operations—as
was the case with the Wisconsin raid and with a recent puppy mill bust in Arkansas—are
set into motion with investigative work by HSUS staff in the respective
states after receiving tips from concerned community members.
There's no group like The HSUS, with the range of tools and
resources we have. And one great measure of our work are the tens of
thousands of little lives spared from misery and cruelty due to our
interventions. Last year alone, The HSUS provided hands-on care to more
than 70,000 animals, whether they were rescued from floods or fires,
abusive puppy mills or animal fighting operations, spayed and neutered
through our programs, or provided medical care through our sanctuaries or rural veterinary programs.

NOT THE WHOLE TRUTH!
Hey Wayne, why dont you tell the people that sent you donations that the HSUS does not even operate one single shelter in the USA! Tell them how you are continuously trampling on honest Americans rights to further your liberal socialist agenda! I believe our government should not be allocating our tax money to go to such discriminating tasks. All the money donated and given by tax money could be used to fight crimes against humanity like murder, burglary , child molestation, domestic violence. The list goes on and on! Pacelle you are a deceptive person that has trampled on hard working Americans God given rights. One day I hope the WHOLE truth comes out!!!!!!!

Ignoramus
You don't know what you are talking about. No tax money goes to animal organizations, none! The money they have is raised by private donations.
What are "hardworking Americans God given rights"? The right to abuse animals ?
We would be much better off with a "liberal socialist agenda" in this country than our wonderful capitalism, which makes a small percentage of the population extremely rich, and leaves most everybody else struggling just to live.

Who is the Ignoramus?
All counties in all states fund their AC services. And often fund the miscel. Animal Organizations with grants. All-Tax-payers- money -HONEY~!
Hardworking-American's-God-given-rights could be "OWNERSHIP"...ownership of our animals without unreasonable restrictions designed to limit our rights.
Ahhh yes, socialist agenda...You should be outraged at the fact that some legislators really consider Americans as being very stupid and unable to make clear and good decisions for themselves. They have been pandering to people for decades with more and more “goodies” being offered, yet they can’t point to a single SUCESSFUL idea or program.
Voters really need to think about that for a second. We are unable to do anything responsible UNLESS government is in control of every single aspect of your life. We need “government protection” from every single thing we do that might impose some risk. If THAT doesn’t outrage you, it should.
Liberals/Socialists are not our friends, but are wanting to take this nation to the brink of disaster and are doing it as they tell you how stupid you really are. We are no longer able to make decisions for ourselves according to the world of HSUS .

Who's money?
Well it sounds all fine and good until you get down to the work in caring for these animals . I would like to know how much the HSUS spends on all these animals they rescue. I am speaking transporting and feeding along with Vet bills. The answer is a big zero. They have a way of going in on the rescue; a couple of HSUS representatives stand there while local shelters and groups do the work and house the animals, who pays? The local groups pay. How much of the HSUS budget is for sheltering animals? They get you to donate and do not help feed all these animals. If you could see the salaries of the top executives of the HSUS you would pass out. Talk about CEO’s who rape their own companies of millions; take a look at the HSUS. So next time you want to donate for the welfare of animals, donate to your local shelter.
