Former “American Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is making his return to the show that he helped create ten years ago. And what’s the first thing that he wants for the revamped show? Paula Abdul, of course.
That’ll be kind of hard, considering that she’s contractually bound to CBS with her new dance show. He says, “I still love Paula. She’s signed to CBS, probably exclusively, but I’d recommend we have her in a heartbeat.”
I agree. With all of the changes going around; Simon leaving, Ellen leaving, Kara getting canned, it would be nice to see another original face on the panel. However, it’s very unlikely that that’s going to pan out for Nigel. It’s good wishful thinking, though.
It appears that he’s rejoining the team just in time to help make the final decision on the judging panel. While he wants Paula, he’d still love to have Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.
“They can knock her film career, but (audiences) know she’s a good actress,” Lythgoe said of Lopez. “And as J-Lo she had some great pop records. If she joins, I’m happy.”
In the case of Aerosmith frontman Tyler, Lythgoe said he liked the rock star’s unpredictable persona.
“He has come through that whole rock ‘n’ roll circus,” Lythgoe said. “Why wouldn’t you want a legend there? You never know what he’s going to say. That, as a TV producer, you’re interested in.”
As part of the reboot, he also plans to focus more on the contestants and less on their personal struggles. In addition to that, he wants to focus on the music and not on the judge’s drama. I can do without the smarmy comebacks from the judges, but I’ve always liked Paula’s vicodin grumbles.
He’s also got plans to expand the brand’s charity, “Idol Gives Back”, which took the year off in 2009.
