Tyrann Mathieu aka Honey Badger Explains His Repeated Problems with Marijuana

| by Alex Groberman

Two years ago Tyrann Mathieu was a Heisman finalist and one of the biggest fan favorites in all of college football. Now he’s a cautionary tale. How does a guy with as much star power and talent as Honey Badger go from hobnobbing in New York with NFL dignitaries to being kicked off LSU’s football team in the span of months?

By not being able to kick smoking marijuana.

During a recent interview with ESPN, Mathieu looked back on his time with the Tigers, where it went wrong for him, and how he hopes to turn things around after the 2013 NFL Draft.

"I know what it feels like to be on the dark side," Mathieu said (via ESPN). "I know what it feels like every day not being able to sleep. Just thinking about football. I know what it feels like to hurt. I know what it feels like to lie to people. I know what it feels like for people not to trust you. I know my mistakes throw red flags up. But I want people to trust me. When I get back on that field, I don't want to get off. I don't ever want to leave this game again."

A lot of guys say stuff like that after they get caught doing something wrong – a fraction of them actually mean. After all of the screw-ups and all of the embarrassments, Honey Badger is going to get one more chance. The NFL Draft will be his final shot at redemption.

We’ll see what he does with it.
