A 19-year-old medical student and beauty queen died earlier this month after a botched liposuction procedure, and now, the surgeon has been arrested.
According to reports, Catherine Cando won the liposuction as a prize in an Ecuadorean beauty competition in October, among other prizes, including a new car and a tablet computer. Cando reportedly put the procedure off because she didn’t feel she needed it, but after pressure from judges to lose some weight as well as constant calls from the surgeon, she decided to go under the knife.
“Before having the surgery, she received a lot of calls from the surgeon trying to persuade her to do it, but she kept saying no,” Cando’s 24-year-old brother Daniel Zavala said. “She was thinking about letting someone else have it as a freebie but eventually she agreed to have it just get him (the surgeon) off her back.”
Popular VideoThis young teenage singer was shocked when Keith Urban invited her on stage at his concert. A few moments later, he made her wildest dreams come true.
After undergoing the procedure on Jan. 10, Cando died, and now, the surgeon has been arrested.
“I was told she had died of a brain edema,” lawyer Carlos Reyes Izquierdo said of the 19-year-old’s death. “But the clinic staff told her relatives that she had died of a cardiac arrest. I have ordered cytological and pathological examinations to find out what exactly happened. However, it can be presumed as negligence because there has been no support from doctors who have failed to explain anything about the case. The doctors in question have been arrested to prevent them from leaving the country.”
It’s unclear what charges the doctors who were arrested are facing.
