Woman Gives Birth To Another Baby In An Effort To Save Older Daughter With Leukemia

A Chinese woman gave birth to a second child in an effort to save her older daughter, who is battling leukemia.

Zhao Linjun and her husband Pan Qilong decided to have another baby after their three-year-old daughter Pan Jing was diagnosed with the disease last year. They knew that the new baby’s chord blood could help save their daughter, so they made their now newborn son Bei Bei for the sole purpose of saving the young girl.

“I must save my daughter,” said Qilong, who says he and his wife are currently borrowing money so they can afford the treatment, which costs close to $84,000.

Bei Bei was born on May 31, and now, doctors plan to take blood from the baby’s umbilical chord to save Pan Jing. Bei Bei is not the first baby to have been born for the sole purpose of saving the life of their sibling, but despite good intentions, this kind of practice has often come with loaded opinions on both sides.

Still, Linjun and Qilong are hopeful that their newborn baby boy will help save his sister’s life, although it could take multiple procedures and lots more money.
