A Missouri mother is dead after undergoing a cosmetic procedure known as a Brazilian butt lift.

Ranika Hall, 25, left her 1-year-old daughter with her mother and traveled to Florida for the surgery, telling her family she was unhappy with her post-pregnancy body.

"I tried to talk her out of it. I really did," her mother, Nicole Hall, told WTVJ. "Her sisters and her brothers tried to talk her out of it."

The procedure, in which fat is taken from a person's torso and injected into the buttocks, was performed at Eres Plastic Surgery in Hialeah, Florida.

According to police, paramedics were called to the facility on March 16 after Ranika lost consciousness and stopped breathing. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she died an hour later.

"Unbelievable, like it's not true," Nicole said of her daughter's death. "It's hard for me to grasp a hold of it."

"I know it's supposed to be a common procedure," she added. "I'm looking for answers."

A statement issued by the clinic's attorney read in part:

Dr. Daniel Calva and Eres Plastic Surgery express their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of our patient who had recently undergone a cosmetic procedure at our center on Thursday evening. Dr. Daniel Calva and Eres Plastic Surgery are deeply saddened by what has occurred and offer their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Dr. Calva is a highly skilled and caring surgeon that is dedicated to providing the highest level of care to his patients.

In May 2016, 29-year-old Heather Meadows died while undergoing a butt lift operation at the same location. At that time, the clinic was under different ownership and was called Encore Plastic Surgery. The location has reportedly changed owners and names multiple times over the last 10 years.

An autopsy concluded that Meadows' organs failed after fat clots clogged her blood vessels, according to WFLA. The medical examiner indicated that the fat particles entered Meadows' blood stream through a vein while the fat was being transferred.

A heart defect also contributed to her death.

WTVJ reports that at least 11 women have died from cosmetic surgery since 2010, most of them during Brazilian butt lift procedures.

According to a survey of doctors conducted by the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation, a person is 20 times more likely to die from a Brazilian butt lift than from any other type of plastic surgery.

Investigations into Ranika's death have been opened by Hialeah Police, state health officials and the clinic where the procedure took place.
