A Georgia mother who went to the doctor complaining of shoulder pain is now at risk of losing her hands and feet after contracting a dangerous flesh-eating bacteria.
Cindy Martinez, a 34-year-old mother from Gwinnett County, Georgia, initially complained to her husband that she had minor shoulder pain. Upon inspection, David Martinez said he saw nothing out of the ordinary. The situation worsened quickly, and Cindy was soon hospitalized with a flesh-eating bacteria that had spread throughout her body. She is now fighting to keep her hands and feet.
“When we first got here, it was minute by minute, hour by hour, and now, it seems to be day by day. Definitely progress, but she's not out of the clear,” David said.
What terrifies the heartbroken husband and the couple’s two children the most, according to David, is the fact that doctors have no idea how his wife got the bacteria in the first place.

“That seems to be the mystery at this point,” he said. "We don't know. She didn't have any injury and, initially, at home when she was feeling the pain, I looked at where the pain was at, and I didn't notice anything and that's what's troubling. I don't know.”
Over the past two weeks, doctors have had to remove dead tissue and muscle from Cindy’s body as a result of the rapidly spreading bacteria. The course of action regarding her limbs has yet to be determined.
“Right now, no decision has been made as to what is going to occur with her hands and feet,” David said. "But there is a high possibility that she is facing several amputations."

He expressed that the most difficult part of the ordeal has been telling his wife and children that he doesn’t know when she’ll be able to come home.
“We have two children together," he said. "Our son is 5 and our daughter is 2 years old. We've been married for 13 years. They miss mom. Every day they’re starting to ask me more and more when is she coming home, and I tell them, ‘She's not coming home for a while.'"
“I had to tell her the truth, she's not coming home, and I don't know when,” he added. “It could be a couple of weeks, months, I don't know. For something like this to occur, I mean for something like this to happen, it's devastating. [She is the] perfect wife, perfect mother.”
David, a local police officer, was forced to take a leave of absence from his job to be by his wife’s side as she fights the bacteria. A GoFundMe page was subsequently launched to help the family with bills and expenses.
