Doctor Pulls 5-Foot Tapeworm From Man's Nose (Video)

| by Michael Doherty

In a disturbing video (below) that has gone viral online, a doctor pulled a 5-foot long tapeworm out of a man's nose with tweezers.

The graphic video shows a man groaning in pain as a doctor yanks the parasitic creature out of his nostril. The clip, reported to have been filmed in Australia, has gained over 4,000 views since it was posted to website LiveLeak, according to the Daily Mail.

"It's so uncomfortable," the man is heard groaning in the video, gasping for breath as the worm is pulled from his nose in a process that takes 30 seconds. After the creature has been removed, the man wipes his nose with a handkerchief.

Tapeworms are usually caught from eating uncooked or undercooked beef or pork, and are more common in developing countries, according to the Mirror. They can also be contracted through coming into contact with contaminated human waste.

The creatures are parasites that lay eggs in the intestines of cows raised for beef.

Tapeworms usually live in a person's intestines. It isn't clear how the worm made its way to the man's nose.

In a similar case in India in September, doctors removed a tapeworm cyst half the size of a young girl's brain from her head. The cyst was believed to be the largest recorded in medical history.

The girl, Nita Juggi, 12, had been suffering from seizures and headaches for two years before the cyst was removed, and had begun to experience paralysis on the right side of her body for a year before doctors intervened.
