A study revealed the most dangerous sex position is when the woman is on top.

Researchers in Brazil set out to determine which position during sexual intercourse leads to the most injuries, and to make their conclusion, they examined the cases of 44 men who went to three different hospitals in Brazil for penile fractures over 13 years. Of the 44 fractures, 28 were sustained during heterosexual sex, four during homosexual activity, six after “penis manipulation” and four in unknown circumstances.

At the conclusion of their study published in Advances in Urology, the researchers determined that half of all penile fractures sustained during sex happened while the woman was on top, most likely because her entire body weight is on top of the penis.

Around 29 percent of all penile fractures happened when the woman was on all fours. The study went on to determine that the safest sexual position is missionary, where the man is on top of the woman.

“Our study supports the fact that sexual intercourse with 'woman on top' is the potentially riskiest sexual position related to penile fracture,” the study reads. “When the man is controlling the movement, he has better chances of stopping the penetration energy in response to the pain related to the penis harm, minimizing it.”

The study notes that half of all men surveyed described hearing a cracking noise during sex and subsequently feeling pain after the incident.
