How to Lose Weight the Healthy Way

With swimsuit season upon us, many are looking for quick fixes to achieve a slender figure this summer; people try everything from fad diets to instant weight loss pills.

These tactics may produce fast results, but they are in no way substantial or healthy.  Weight loss can’t be accomplished just with the snap of your fingers, it takes dedication and self-discipline.

The two major components to losing weight the healthy way, are eating healthy and regular physical activity.  Choosing one or the other may only get you so far.

Together, these two things are the healthiest and most efficient ways to see results you are looking for.

Proper nutrition is crucial if your goal is to lose weight. Yes, exercise is also important, but if you choose to eat unhealthy foods you tend to cancel out the hard work you put in at the gym.  The main thing to remember is variety!

You must eat from all of the food groups and eat all different colors of food in order to obtain essential nutrients. Eat plenty of fiber, protein, and healthy fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated)

Cutting out high sugar and high fat foods completely will normally come back to haunt you.  If you restrict yourself from eating certain foods that you love, chances are binge eating will occur. Don’t forget to treat yourself every once in a while to prevent overeating of these high calorie foods.

Physical activity doesn’t just take one form, but it takes many. It could be running, walking, kick boxing, boot camp, yoga, spinning, basketball, swimming, weightlifting, and so much more.

Little things such as parking farther from a building in order to walk more, taking stairs instead of the elevator, playing with your kids, and taking your dog on a walk are also all acceptable forms of activity.

Make it a goal to do at least 1 hour of physical activity per day, at least 5 days a week.

Most Americans enjoy instant gratification and like to see results right away.  Substantial weight loss should be a gradual process that relies greatly on a positive attitude and dedication.  Instead of making an unrealistic goal of losing five pounds per week, shoot for losing 1-2 pounds per week.

This goal would not only be healthier, but it would be much more attainable.

Losing weight is more than just seeing the numbers on the scale decrease; it is about choosing to lead a healthier lifestyle in order to live a healthier and happier life.
