Video: Massachusetts School Wants Free Condoms for 12 Year Olds

article image

In Springfield, Massachusetts, the Springfield School Committee has given initial approval to a policy that would make free condoms available to students as young as 12 (video below).

Last Thursday night, the committee voted 5-1 in favor of a 'Comprehensive Reproductive Health Policy' to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy. The policy also includes a provision for student counselling on abstinence.

While some parents will disagree with the idea, the policy will allow them "to deny permission (opt out) for access to condoms for their students."

The Daily Mail reports that the policy still needs one more vote for final approval, but a majority of the committee plans on voting for it again.

Vice-Chairman Christoper Collins said: "Part of it talks about abstinence, it talks about all the responsibility that goes along with it and it's actually decreasing the amount of sexual activity in young children."

Committee member Peter Murphy was the lone vote against the policy: "They should not be sexually active at age 12, age 13. It's inappropriate and in fact, it's illegal."

If you look at the data,

If you look at the data, decreases in teen pregnancy are directly related to video games and increases in teen obesity.... that is a sorry statement!

What people have found with abstinence only sex education is that it actually causes an increase in teen pregnancy and STDs. We are much better off acknowledging reality and trying to get kids to accept responsibilities for their actions than trying to tell them "no."

Really? Then maybe your dumb

Really? Then maybe your dumb ass can explain how teen pregnancy has EXPLODED the last few decades as ABSTINENCE has been DECREASING as THE chosen method of keeping teens from becoming pregnant.

Your dumb ass cant connect the dots that show that as we have made sex MORE open in the classroom and made it MORE acceptable socially for UNmarried teenagers to be having sex that teen pregnancy rates have gone thru the damned ceiling in the USA.

Its idiots like YOU with your complete lack of morals who have caused this problem to grow to the levels it has.

You can scream as loud as you

You can scream as loud as you want, but you're still a racist right wing dip shit.

News Flash: Teenagers have sex. They had sex in the 40s, 50s, and earlier. In the past, it was the source of many shotgun weddings.

Do you're own homework moron. Look at the teen pregnancy rate and STD rate in Texas, which has abstinence only education - they have some of the worst numbers in the US. Dig deeper, and you'll see that abstinence only education is an unmitigated failure.

If you teach kids that sex is something responsible adults do as an expression of love and commitment in a MONOGAMOUS relationship, results are much better than saying don't have sex ever until you're married.

I have several daughters, four so far have made it through high school without getting pregnant or coming down with an STD. Two now have degrees, and are on their way to graduate school. I think my approach speaks for itself.

Since when has putting a

Since when has putting a legal prohibition on something people do removed their desire to do it? If that was the case, the Volstead act and the 18th amendment would still be in place and the "war on drugs" would have been over in less than a week. And with with alcohol prohibition in the 20's the population wasn't constantly bombarded with seeing people engaged in those "illegal" activities on an hourly basis like they are today with alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, and sex. On top of that, these things are only denied for some people and not others, so the prohibitions seem arbitrary and unfair.

You are not going to turn off people's biological drives, no matter how many laws you pass or how much time you spend waggling the holy babble at them.

Denying kids comprehensive sex education and access to safety devices for it is akin to refusing to teach them how to use safety belts (since they aren't supposed to be driving yet), and then leaving these teenagers in a parking lot full of unlocked cars with their keys in the ignition for months on end, after telling them you'd be disappointed in them if they actually drove a car. Loaded guns lying about everywhere and refusing to teach kids gun safety also makes a good analogy here.

Sex isn't a bad, evil, or shameful thing (you come from a long line of people that very likely tried it at least once), being irresponsible is. Refusing to teach people safety about something they WILL do is the height of irresponsibility. Texas has long been teaching the abstinence-only brand of sex education, and it's earned them the distinction of having the nation's highest rate of teen pregnancy.

I was sexually active at age

I was sexually active at age 13 and that was in the 1950's in small towns. I doubt things have changed much since then.

There is nothing anyone can do to prevent adolescents from being sexually active. I question whether the free condoms are what is making them exercise restraint. The education that goes with them night, though. But why aren't the parent's being responsible for that? Oops, forget I asked that, stupid question.

Just because YOU were a slut

Just because YOU were a slut in the 50's doesnt mean that most kids were then. Anyone who even tries to pretend like teen pregnancy was as high then as it is today is both a liar and deluded.

In the 70s I went to some very inner city low dollar schools where drugs use abounded and there MAY have been a handful of girls who got pregnant any given school year...IF THAT. I only personally knew of ONE my entire time in high school...and again this was BIG CITY schools where drugs were common.

These days you cant drive by a HS without seeing half a dozen pregnant teens. It HAS gotten worse and making it 'ok' for CHILDREN to have sex has made it worse.

See my other post.... teen

See my other post.... teen pregnancy is at its lowest level in 40 years primarily due to better and more consistent use of contraception.

OK, so you vote for ignorance

OK, so you vote for ignorance over education. The numbers are there if you care to look. States preaching abstinence-only have higher rates of teen pregnancy and STDs than those that teach responsibility and caring. But those are facts and clearly have no place in your addled little brain.

FYI, "slut" refers to a sexually loose female. I did have sex at 13, but not again until I was 16, then not again until I was 19. That is hardly being sexually "loose". But again, you have no use for facts, they just make you look even more stupid.

Do you wonder why our

Do you wonder why our children are failing at education? Look at the idiots behind their educators. Public school is no longer adequate education for the children. There are idiots mentally traumatizing our children with their stupidity.

Why is it the educational

Why is it the educational system is always looking for new ways to teach and be "effective" since America's kids keep doing dismally in tests and such. My question is why not look to when we were ahead of other countries, we were obviously doing something right.

Sorry my response is under baseman's technical error.

The responsible people are

The responsible people are having fewer children. The irresponsible are simply producers and know they don't have to pay anything as the state will do it for them. All these non English speaking and non motivated students slow down the education of our citizens who should be learning at a faster pace. Our schools are being progressively more dumbed down. People who cannot afford it have to send their kids to private school to get any kind of decent education. The public schools just continually get worse. If kids are having sex at 12 and will use a condom...give it to them. Obviously their parents are not doing their job and what's the chance that THAT will change? We need to start talking about population control. Pay people to go on and stay on contraceptives or get fixed. Anyone without two nickels to rub together and 4 or 5 kids is going to do it. The crack addict who has 8 kids and does not even know their names is going to be happy to do it.

Sally Anne's picture

First of all why are you

First of all why are you bringing children who don't speak English into this? Are you saying that all ESL students are doing nothing more than crushing our nation? Because if you are then you obviously don't know that the foundation of our great country is based on the fact that if you come to America no matter where you are from you will be given the chance to make something of your self on the basis of FREE education.

Being sexually active when you're barely a teenager is bad, but what's even worse is not having access to protection. You can't blame a child for choosing to have a sex-life when you're against teaching and making them aware of the consequences. You can't blame the downfall of education on parents ( or even teachers and administrative staff) when you don't know the full situation.

I might only be 13 but I know that a majority of what you wrote is the general view of those who are so conservative they aren't willing to loosen up and help with the progression of our nation.Join the real world and see what it's like in an inner city school before you're so quick to judge.

baseman's picture

Sally Anne, just what do you

Sally Anne, just what do you recommend for the progression of our nation? Or at least the educational system.
