New Mexico Launches Sex Ed. Hotline for Teens, Parents
New Mexico has created a text messaging service to answer biological questions about sex for teens and their parents.
According to the New Mexico State Department of Health, its bilingual "BrdsNBz" hotline will provide scientifically accurate answers within 24 hours via text on a cell phone, notes KRQE.com.
State Education official Valerie Fisher hopes the BrdsNBz hotline will help bring down the state’s high teen birth rates.
Teens can text “NMTeen," while parents should text “NMParent” to 66746 to ask questions, which might include, "Can I pregnant the first time I have sex?"
In response, the BrdsNBZ hotline texts: "Hello. Thank you for the question. Yes - you can absolutely get pregnant the first time. Any time a man and a woman have intercourse, pregnancy is possible (of course, the chance of pregnancy is greatly reduced if you are using an effective method of birth control).
