Oklahoma Mom Says Toddler Got Herpes At Daycare
An Oklahoma City mother claims her one-year-old daughter contracted herpes from a daycare teacher.
Consuela Smith says her daughter has been in constant pain since May.
“She started getting blisters all around her mouth and bleeding,” Smith told KFOR-TV.
Smith says she took her daughter to the doctor immediately.
“They told me that she has herpes,” she said.
She says an employee at ChildTime daycare admitted a teacher there has the STD.
“I told her what she had and they told me the worker does have this,” Smith said.
“Herpetic stomatitis is basically when you have multiple cold sores in your mouth,” Dr. Ryan Brown, of OU Children’s Hospital told KFOR. “Cold sores are normally caused by herpes simplex one virus. They are very easily spread, by touching and rubbing something else or saliva.”
ChildTime says it will investigate the incident.
“Our children’s well-being is of the utmost importance to us,” ChildTime’s corporate office said in a statement. “We have strict policies and procedures to ensure we meet or exceed regulatory guidelines on health and safety. We take every precaution to prevent the spread of germs or illness, and investigate any reported concerns.”
"I was hurt. I felt sad as a parent and I feel like I let her down," Smith said.
She says she’s focusing on getting her daughter well again.
“It’s nasty,” she said. “A one-year-old walking around with Herpes.”
