New York Man Gives His Sick Wife A Valentine’s Day Kidney Transplant

| by Sarah Fruchtnicht

A 62-year-old New York man gave his sick wife the most priceless Valentine’s Day gift: one of his kidneys.

Richard Mach’s wife Joy suffers from Crohn’s disease. Transplanting one of his kidneys may be the only way she can avoid one day having to undergo painful dialysis.

“It’s certainly the best Valentine’s gift I could ever give her,” Mach told the New York Daily News. “I don’t think I’ll be able to top it ever again, that’s for sure. I think we’ll have to go back to chocolate after this.”

On Thursday, the couple underwent dual surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

“It couldn’t be a better gift,” said Joy Mach, who began experiencing kidney problem a few years ago. “We laughed about it, that he couldn’t come up with any ideas after 40 years so he decided to give me one of his organs. It was so fortuitous. It really was.”

The couple, who met in 1974, says they didn’t plan to have the surgery so close to the holiday.

“It’s from the heart. It’s love. In the truest sense of the word, that’s what Valentine’s Day is all about,” Richard said.

“We always celebrated it in a low-key, romantic kind of way,” Joy said of Valentine’s past.

After surgery Thursday, the couple was reunited on Friday.

In 2013, a Nashville woman gave her husband of 25 years one of her kidneys.

"What better day to show God's love as much as our love?" Kim Duncan, 48, said before she and her husband Thomas Duncan, 49, were wheeled into the operating room.
