A new mother was shocked when she saw her own bowel and intestines after a surgical scar from a caesarian section reopened.
Three days after giving birth to her daughter Chloe via planned C-section on March 24, Sam Bell left the hospital. Two days later, a midwife was called to Bell's Liphook, Hampshire, home to remove the bead stitch.
As Bell, 28, stood up after the simple routine procedure, she felt her jeans sticking to her body.
"I just felt this twinge," Bell told the Daily Mail. "It almost felt like my trousers were stuck to my stomach, so I pulled them open.
"I looked down and as I did that my wound opened and my bowel and intestines just fell out."
During the 40 minutes it took for an ambulance to arrive at her home, Bell feared that more of her insides would fall out.
“It was quite tough because I was crying but trying not to cry because I didn’t know how much else could come out of me,” Bell said. “I just didn’t know what to do.”
The midwife, who told Bell she had never seen anything like that before, was also shocked.
Bell had 20 staples put in and spent another four days at the hospital.
“We offer our full and sincerest apologies to Ms. Bell for what must have been a very distressing experience,” a spokesperson for St. Hellier’s hospital said. “Immediately following this incident, a full review and investigation was launched.”
The spokesperson added that following the investigation measures would be taken to avoid the same situation in the future. The results will be shared with Bell, who noted that she felt dismissed by hospital staff about the situation.
