Mom Shares Story Of 4-Year-Old Son's Cancer Battle

| by Michael Doherty

A mom whose 4-year-old son died from cancer has shared her tragic story in an emotional Facebook post.

Ruth Scully's young son, Nolan, had originally come down with what appeared to be a stuffy nose in 2015, before being diagnosed with a rare soft tissue cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma, according to WJW. Nolan died from the cancer in February 2017.

"Two months. Two months since I've held you in my arms, heard how much you loved me, kissed those sweetie 'pie' lips," wrote Ruth in the heartbreaking post. "Two months since we’ve snuggled. Two months of pure absolute hell."

Ruth wrote about the day that she took Nolan to the hospital for the last time and learned his cancer had become untreatable.

This young teenage singer was shocked when Keith Urban invited her on stage at his concert. A few moments later, he made her wildest dreams come true.

"When I brought Nolan to the hospital for the last time, I knew there was something else wrong other than just a lingering case of C-DIFF," wrote Ruth. "I just knew, and strange enough, I think he did too. He hadn't eaten or drank anything in days and was continually vomiting."

The boy's body had become resistant to all treatment options, and Nolan's oncologist told Ruth the plan would be to keep him comfortable until he died.

Ruth wrote that she had to tell her son that he didn't need to fight anymore, and that the only way she could keep him safe was in heaven. She wrote that the conversation was "heart-shattering."

"I cannot explain to you what signing an emergency responder 'do not resuscitate' order for your angelic son feels like," Ruth wrote.

Ruth said that when she went to briefly take a shower, Nolan went into a deep sleep. When she came back out, Nolan's right lung had collapsed. Ruth wrote that Nolan opened his eyes for a moment, smiled and told her, "I love you, mommy," before passing away.

"My angel took a breath, opened his eyes, smiled at me and said 'I Love You Mommy,' turned his head towards me and at 11:54 pm Sgt. Rollin Nolan Scully passed away as I was singing 'You are My Sunshine' in his ear," wrote the mom.

"I look at everything he accomplished in 4 short years and can only think of what he could've accomplished with a longer life," wrote Ruth. "But sadly because of childhood cancer ... the world and out family will miss out on someone so full of love, who just wanted to protect and serve."

She also shared an image of Nolan curled on a rug on the floor of the bathroom, so that he could wait for his mother while she showered.

"My son was terrified to leave my side, even as I showered," she said. "Now I'm the one terrified to shower. With nothing but an empty shower rug now where once a beautiful perfect little boy laid waiting for his Mommy."
