Twins who faced a high chance of dying before birth as they battled a rare condition have survived (video below).
Their mother, Lisa Hansen, has shared the roller coaster of a journey she and her husband had to endure, LittleThings reports.
The children were monochorionic monoamniotic twins, meaning both developed inside the same gestational sac.
Such cases are extremely rare, affecting anywhere between 1 in 35,000 to 1 in 60,000 pregnancies, according to Pregnancy-Info.net. The condition can be fatal, with a 50 percent chance the babies could die.
“Unfortunately, monoamniotic twins are at great risk for health complications due to the close proximity of the two umbilical cords in the amniotic sac,” the website states. "This makes it particularly easy for the twins to become entangled in each other’s cords, or to compress one another’s cords, endangering their oxygen and food supply."
The parents created a YouTube video-letter to their babies, describing their miraculous birth.
“...we were given the option to abort you because of the high risk & stress, right after we saw you here...” reads the letter. The video then shows a 3-D ultrasound photo of the babies at 19 weeks inside the womb.
“...but we loved you and wanted you even before we saw you.”
"I went inpatient at the hospital from 5 months to be highly monitored," the YouTube video description states.
Lisa underwent a C-section and gave birth to the twins at only seven months.
Miraculously, the twin girls -- River and Piper -- survived.
"They were in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for 6.5 weeks and we were so happy to finally be able to take our babies home!" the description concludes.
Lisa attributes her babies' survival to the power of prayer, including a quote by Dr. Peter Kreeft at the end of the video:
I strongly suspect that if we saw all the difference even the tiniest of our prayers make, and all the people those little prayers were destined to affect, and all the consequences of those effects down through the centuries, we would be so paralyzed with awe at the power of prayer that we would be unable to get up off our knees for the rest of our lives.
