| by Michael Allen

A new poll of 1,168 adults nationwide claims that most Americans think a perfect man is a doctor who looks like Patrick Dempsey and has become a success by age 40.

According to a survey by 60 Minutes and Vanity Fair, 35 percent of Americans think education is the top priority for a man, followed by being a hard worker at 28 percent and social graces at 27 percent.

According to the poll, 78 percent of Americans believe that mothers have significant or total control over how a "perfect man" turns out, which would put dear old Mom in the category of God.

When it came to which celebrity most Americans would want to marry, Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shephard (played by Patrick Dempsey) of the TV show "Grey's Anatomy" came in first at 29 percent.

Americans also said they would most like to change a man's temper, 29 percent, and then his friends, 11 percent.

There was a tie when asked when a man's success should be determined with "age 40" and "deathbed" both at 23 percent.
