A California man is now getting professional care to remove his hernia after first attempting to do it himself with a butter knife. He is also under a psychiatric watch.
Glendale police responded to the man's house Sunday night after his wife called to say he had impaled himself on a knife. When they arrived, they found the 63-year-old man, whose name was not released, lying naked on a lounge chair outside. The handle of the six-inch butter knife was protruding from his stomach.
According to the Glendale News-Press, as police waited for paramedics to arrive, the man shockingly pulled out the knife and replaced it with a cigarette he was smoking.
"What he was thinking, I don't know," Sgt. Tom Lorenz said. "I don't know if he was cauterizing it (the wound). You just never know what to expect. I've seen self-mutilation, but not a maneuver like this."

The wife told police that her husband was upset about the hernia and wanted to take it out.
“Out of frustration, he tried to cut it out,” Lorenz said.
Never a good idea, say doctors.
“It is absolutely impossible for someone to fix their own hernia,” said surgeon Sam Carvajal, who did not operate on the man. “Obviously, there is some amount of psychosis going on."
