The state of Louisiana is in court trying to defund Planned Parenthood by blocking Medicaid payments, based on the orders of Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, who is a GOP presidential candidate.

One of state's lawyers claimed in court on Sept. 2 that if Planned Parenthood were defunded then 2,000 family planning providers would be available to serve 5,200 patients who use Planned Parenthood.

According to the state's lawyer, those family planning providers include caregivers in nursing homes, dentists, eye doctors, ear doctors and cosmetic surgeons, notes Mother Jones.

In response, Judge John W. deGravelles told the state's lawyer:

"It strikes me as extremely odd that you have a dermatologist, an audiologist, a dentist who are billing for family planning services, but that is what you're representing to the court? You're telling me that they can provide family planning and related services?"

The state's lawyer stood by the list by claiming that the medical codes had been billed to insurance.

One week later, on Sept. 9, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals said in court papers that it "discovered that nursing facilities and dentists should not have been included in" the list, notes The Times-Picayune.
