A new mother in Iowa is fighting for her life after having gallstone attacks during her pregnancy (video below).

Laura Adams, 26, of Marshalltown, Iowa, was two weeks away from her due date when she began experiencing intense abdominal pain on Dec. 6, KCCI reports. Early in the morning of Dec. 9, she woke up and told her husband they needed to go to the hospital right away.

"That morning is a memory I will never forget. She was like, 'Darin, we have to go now. We have to get to the hospital now,'" Laura's husband, Darin Adams, told KCCI.

After the couple visited Laura's OB-GYN in Marshalltown, the doctor decided to perform an emergency cesarean section. The couple's daughter, Josephine, was born healthy at around 8:07 a.m. that morning.

Laura remained in serious condition after the birth.

Doctors discovered a gallstone that she had acquired during her pregnancy had gotten stuck in her body and caused an infection that spread to her pancreas and colon.

"Her pancreas right now is effectively eating itself alive," said Darin, who has been married to Laura for seven years. "So she will be insulin-dependent for the rest of her life."

According to a GoFundMe page that Darin created to help pay for his wife's medical bills, Laura was eventually air-lifted to University of Iowa Hospitals, where she remains in a medically induced coma. She is currently dependent on a respirator to breathe, and an update to the page reports that she may have also suffered damage to her diaphragm.

She has already undergone five surgeries and may need up to 10 more.

Darin said his wife was given a 50 percent chance of survival, and will have to be moved to a long-term care facility when she leaves the hospital.

"The only thing Laura wants to do is hold her baby," Darin told KCCI. "She just wants to feed her baby, but she can't. She is likely going to miss out on all those mom firsts."

The GoFundMe page has raised nearly $30,000 in 10 days.

Laura's co-workers at the Iowa Veteran's Home, where she works as a musical therapist, have also donated 300 hours of sick leave to her as she recovers from her condition. Her recovery may take up to a year.

Darin said his wife wants to warn other women to pay attention to their own health during pregnancy.

"A healthy baby is not all that matters," said Darin, according to KCCI. "A healthy mom is equally as important. Pay attention to your body. Understand when you need to go to the doctor. Don't wait."
