A jail guard in Weatherford, Texas, suffered a heart attack on June 23, but was saved by some quick-thinking inmates who risked their own lives (video below).

As about eight prisoners watched from inside a holding cell in the basement of the District Courts Building, the guard keeled over and became unconscious.

"He just fell over," inmate Nick Kelton told WFAA. "I thought it looked like an act or something, could have died right there."

The handcuffed inmates called for help, but no one came, so they broke out of the holding cell, even though they realized the danger.

"We was a little worried because they’re going to come with guns drawn on us," Kelton added.

While the guard lay without a pulse, the inmates started banging on doors and screaming, finally getting the attention of some deputies upstairs.

Parker County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Speegle recalled: "Yeah, it could have been an extremely bad situation."

Speegle was the first officer to arrive, and focused his attention on getting the helpful inmates back in their cell.

More deputies arrived and began CPR. Paramedics also came to the scene and shocked the unresponsive guard back to life.

"That's a good man, saved his life" Kelton added.

Capt. Mark Arnett agreed that the prisoners possibly saved the guard's life.

"He could have been there 10, 15 minutes before any other staff, any other sheriff office, county personnel had walked in there and found him," Arnett stated.

Jail officials refused to identify the guard, who is employed by a private prison company.

"It never crossed my mind not to help, whether he’s got a gun or a badge," Kelton added. "If he falls down, I’m gonna help him."

Police reinforced the holding cell door that the inmates pushed their way out of.

According to, a similar type of rescue occurred at the Orient Road Jail in Tampa. In that case, inmates rescued a guard who was in the clutches of another inmate who was using a choke hold.
