Trader Joe's Recalls Applesauce For Possible Glass Shards

| by Michael Doherty

Grocery chain Trader Joe's has announced a voluntary recall of some types of their unsweetened apple sauce because the products may contain shards of glass.

The three varieties of apple sauce that are being recalled were distributed in the northwestern U.S., and Trader Joe's is encouraging customers to throw out the apple sauce or return it to Trader Joe's for a complete refund, KING-TV reports. The grocer has warned customers not to eat this apple sauce, because there may be pieces of glass in it.

The three types of apple sauce being recalled include all codes of Trader Joe's First Crush Unsweetened Gravenstein Apple Sauce through the best before date of Aug. 8, 2018, all codes of Trader Joe's Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce through the best before date of Oct. 6, 2018, and all codes of Trader Joe's All Natural Unsweetened Apple Sauce through the best before date of Dec. 16, 2018.

The dates for the products can be found on the top of the lids.

Trader Joe's said in their recall announcement that all potentially affected products have been removed from shelves and destroyed.

The "All Natural" applesauce was reportedly sold at stores in a number of states including California, Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington. The "First Crush" and "Organic" apple sauces were sold in Trader Joe's stores nationwide, according to Food Safety News.

The recall was reportedly announced after customers complained to the grocery store that they had found pieces of glass in the products, according to a report the FDA's website.

Trader Joe's has previously recalled nuts including cashews and pistachios in 2016 because of possible salmonella outbreaks, according to Food Safety News. The cashews were reportedly recalled after a routine FDA test discovered salmonella in one lot of the nuts.
