Fox News Guest Betsy McCaughey Tries to Scare Seniors with Lies About Obamacare (Video)

Betsy McCaughey has a long history of opposing and distorting health care reform, dating back to when President Clinton was in office.

According to MediaMatters.org, McCaughey recently appeared on Fox News where she falsely claimed that Obamacare will hurt older people “by eviscerating Medicare” (video below).

“This law, as written, is designed to vastly expand Medicaid and pay for it by eviscerating Medicare, taking $700 billion out of Medicare and moving it over to fund this expansion of this entitlement,” claimed McCaughey. “It’s like robbing Grandma to spread the wealth.”

Fox News host Megyn Kelly then asked McCaughey why “they” would want to expand Medicaid, which provides medical care for the poorest Americans.

“Because they believe in a single payer system, and Medicaid is a single payer system,” said McCaughey. “This is a way of vastly shifting resources in this country from one group of people, the elderly, to another group of people.”

This false claim harkens back to Mitt Romney when he was running for president in 2012. Romney tried to scare senior citizens by telling them that Medicare would be cut by $716 because of Obamacare.

What Romney and McCaughey both fail to mention is that these cuts do not actually affect Medicare benefits, but rather are a reduction of how much hospitals and insurance companies will be paid by Medicare.

The Washington Post reported in 2012:

It’s worth noting that there's one area these cuts don't touch: Medicare benefits. The Affordable Care Act rolls back payment rates for hospitals and insurers. It does not, however, change the basket of benefits that patients have access to.
