Laura Smith, a Colorado half-marathon runner who stands 6 foot 3 and weighs 250 pounds, says that health spa owner Penny Wells refused to give her a massage. Smith says that Wells told her she was “too fat” and “would probably break the table.” Smith had completed a half-marathon just the day before. The incident occurred at the Natural Healing Center in Aurora, Colo. Smith left the office in tears.
According to The Daily News, Smith was “furious” with the comments from Wells and found the remarks “especially stinging” because she had recently lost a lot of weight. Smith said, “She, the doctor, came out and said, ‘I'm sorry. But you are too fat for our table. You'll probably break it and you'll have to pay for it.’ I was, like, in shock.”
Wells says that she referred to Smith as large rather than fat. She also said that a recent 165-pound client had broken a table and that she was worried the same thing would happen with the larger Smith.
Jim Kambeitz, of Kambeitz Chiropractic Health and Wellness, said that most tables are designed to be able to support a weight capacity of 500 pounds. “I don't know about this facility, maybe they need to re-look at their benches,” he said.
Smith is not letting the incident keep her down. She has gotten support from both friends and family and, instead of dwelling on her failed attempt to get a massage, Smith is focusing on training for her next half-marathon in May.
