Female TSA Agent Mistakes IUD For IED Bomb

| by Michael Allen

Emma Tillinger Koskoff, a film producer who works with Martin Scorsese, says a female TSA agent thought her joke about an IUD (intrauterine device) was a reference to an IED (improvised explosive device).

Koskoff recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the incident occurred when she was catching a flight from New York to Los Angeles in December 2016.

Koskoff recalled that she walked through an airport scanner, but a female TSA agent asked her to undergo an additional security check of her neck, wrist and groin.

While Koskoff and the TSA agent waited for a TSA supervisor to arrive and conduct the extra security check, Koskoff joked that her IUD birth control must have set off the scanner:

She suddenly wouldn't even look at me and then she said something into her walkie-talkie. The supervisor comes over and calls for the head of security because they thought I was talking about an IED. The scene was gnarly for a minute.

The woman, who was in her mid-30s, didn't know what an IUD was, which is fine. She did the pat-down and it was not even an issue. I'm all for making sure that no one has bombs on themselves and people being patted down for security purposes. I ran to my plane and made it.

Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards told CNN host Christiane Amanpour on Jan. 9 that the women's health care organization has seen a surge in IUD requests.

"We’ve had a 900 percent increase in women trying to get into Planned Parenthood to get an IUD because they are desperately concerned that they might lose their access to health care, and they know that Planned Parenthood is the place that can provide it," Richards said.

Richards also mentioned that Republicans have said they will defund Planned Parenthood:

What we’re talking about now in fact and what Paul Ryan, Speaker Ryan, said the other day, is now they're gonna end access to Planned Parenthood preventive care. That means birth control services, cancer screenings, well-woman visits. We provide health care to two-and-a-half million people every year, and that health care is now at risk.
