An Atlanta, Georgia, nursing home is reportedly under investigation for neglect and abuse after an elderly female resident was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Reports say that the 77-year-old woman was rushed to a local hospital with a 3-inch wound on the side of her head that resulted in her needing four staples to close it as well as bleeding on her brain. During examination, doctors also discovered that the woman had terrible hygiene, ingrown toenails, and an open wound on the back of her hand covered by a bandage that hadn’t been changed for some time.

According to 11 Alive News, the woman had been living in the nursing home for four years, after an accident left her unable to move or communicate.

“She is bedridden. She is basically dependent on people to take care of her and that has not been done,” the woman’s grandson Ryan Sheppard told 11 Alive News. “They just say it’s under investigation. They can’t tell us anything. Nobody is confessing, nobody is telling us anything.”

Police are now investigating Snellville’s New London Health Center to see if abuse and neglect occurred.

“In my 15 years, I’ve never seen anything like that,” Snellville Police Detective O.J. Concepcion said. “A lot of people put trust in these homes — these nursing facilities — to take care of their loved ones, and when you see hygiene and things are not being properly taken care of its [sic] concerning.”

The woman has reportedly been transferred to a nearby hospice facility where doctors are closely monitoring her health.
