A 30-year-old woman delivered a healthy boy and a headless baby at Bombay Hospital on Thursday. The first-time mother, who did not want to be identified, was surely dealing with a wide range of emotions after such a strange and disturbing birthing experience.
According to The Times of India, the malformed fetus, known in medical terms as acardia monster baby, was stillborn. Dr Shilpa Ambekar, the gynecologist who treated the mother throughout the pregnancy, said: “The parents are still in a state of shock after seeing the stillborn baby."
Having an acardia monster baby is a rare occurrence that usually only happens with twins. The incidence is said to happen in just one out of every 40,000 live births. According to Dr. Ambekar, the baby only had an abdomen and no head, neck or face. “It had one limb as well as fingers emerging directly from the abdomen,” she said.
The condition of acardia is characterized by the absence of a functioning heart. Doctors said the acardia twin survives like a parasite, drawing blood and nutrition from the normal twin.

The parents were told about the problem during the fifth month of pregnancy. “They were offered medical termination of pregnancy, but the mother said she didn't want to harm the normal twin,” said Dr. Ambekar. “Hence, she decided to carry on with the pregnancy.”
Dr Ambekar added: “At times, it is difficult to make out this anomaly until the fifth month or so. Once detected, it is important to counsel the parents.”
Few details have emerged about the healthy baby boy because of the attention his headless twin is receiving, but hopefully he is doing fine.
