After being hospitalized with a head injury, 11-year-old Ireland Lane is recovering from third-degree burns after her shirt somehow became engulfed in flames in a Portland, Ore., hospital room. Lane is a cancer survivor. The young girl was in her room at Doernbecher Children's Hospital painting when her t-shirt caught on fire.
According to Yahoo News, hospital staff members were able to extinguish the flames, but the cause of the fire is still unknown. Although it is still a mystery as to whether this played a part in the accident, Ireland said she used hand sanitizer to clean a table that rolled over her bed prior to the fire.
“I've been in medicine going back 30 years now and never heard of anything like this. And hopefully I never will again,” said Dr. Stacy Nicholson, physician-in-chief at Doernbecher Children's Hospital. “Our safety experts are working closely with the Oregon State Fire Marshal's office on its investigation. We anxiously await their findings and will certainly make adjustments if the cause was preventable.”
A spokesman for the Oregon State Fire Marshal said that officials are looking into whether some combination of the alcohol-based sanitizer and static electricity could have caused the fire.
Ireland is listed in serious condition and has burns on her chest, neck, arms and earlobes. She is scheduled to undergo a second skin graft Thursday, the same day that she turns 12.
“She's quite a tough one,” the girl's father, Stephen Lane. “She's been through more than any child I've ever heard of, and to still walk around with a smile on her face and enjoy the things of the day that are going on, and be a kid is to me pretty amazing.”
Mr. Lane was sleeping in his daughter’s hospital room when the fire broke out. He says that the girl doesn’t remember the fire but that he can’t get it out of his head. “I can handle all of it - I'm a dad and I'm supposed to,” Lane said. “But I hate seeing her unhappy stuck in a hospital again.”
