Speaking on his 'WallBuilders Live' radio show today, debunked Christian historian David Barton claimed that AIDS was God's penalty for those who engage in "shameful sexual acts" (audio below).
However, Barton made no mention of people, including children, who contract AIDS via blood transfusion or babies who are born with HIV because their mother was infected.
Barton added that if a cure is discovered for AIDS, then new diseases will kill people per Romans 1:27 in the Bible, noted RightWingWatch.org.
Romans 1:27 states: "And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."
Barton claimed that "receiving in themselves" means diseases such as AIDS, but the Bible doesn't actually say "disease."
Barton also claimed that bacterial meningitis was a "penalty" from God, but failed to mention the numerous ways that people can contract it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bacterial meningitis can be spread via "close or long contact with a sick person in the same household or daycare center... Healthy people can carry the bacteria in their nose or throat without getting sick. Rarely, these bacteria can invade the body and cause disease. Most people who ‘carry’ the bacteria never become sick."
Ignoring science, Barton claimed: "I've gone on record before, and I'll say it again: I think Romans 1:27 is one of the reasons that we'll never find a complete cure for AIDS. And if we do there will be another disease pop up like this bacterial meningitis because the Bible says this, Romans 1:27 says 'men committed shameful acts with other men, sexual acts, and received in themselves the due penalty for the error.'
"There is going to be a consequence for this type of sexual behavior, so even if we find a cure for AIDS, something like bacterial meningitis is going to pop up. If we cure that, something else is going to pop up because God says there is a penalty in your own body when you do this kind of sexual acts. The Bible calls them shameful sexual acts. And so we as Christians have to have that same position, regardless of what the culture says."
