Internet Users Angry Over Calvin Klein's Supposed Views On Plus-Sized Model

| by Dominic Kelly

Calvin Klein is facing criticism for their new campaign, which features a “plus-sized” model who most people would never consider to be plus-sized.

The clothing giant’s new campaign is called “Perfectly Fit” and features 27-year-old model Myla Dalbesio. The campaign was launched to promote the company’s latest line of underwear, but Dalbesio says she was “confused” by the labeling of her as plus-sized.

“It’s kind of confusing because I’m a bigger girl,” Dalbesio told Elle Magazine. “I’m not the biggest girl on the market, but I’m definitely bigger than all the girls [Calvin Klein] has ever worked with, so that is really intimidating.”

Dalbesio says that nobody at Calvin Klein made a big deal out of the fact that she’s considered a plus-sized model, but people all over social media are outraged at the categorization.

“WTF [email protected] --this is your ‘plus-size model’? Give me a freaking break!” wrote one Twitter user.

Another pointed out that they could have been talking more about her height than her weight: “Maybe they meant plus-size as in height? Maybe she's 7 foot tall and that's enough for them?”

Dalbesio defends Calvin Klein, however, and says that the company never branded her as a plus-sized model to begin with.

“It’s not like [Calvin Klein] released this campaign and were like ‘Whoa, look, there’s this plus-size girl in our campaign,’” said Dalbesio. “They released me in this campaign with everyone else; there’s no distinction. It’s not a separate section for plus-size girls.”

Still, many people see it as a much larger problem within the modeling industry as a whole.

Calvin Klein has since responded to criticism, saying that they never advertised the model to be anything other than just someone modeling their underwear.

“The new Calvin Klein Underwear Perfectly Fit imagery features models Myla Dalbesio, Jourdan Dunn, Amanda Wellsh, Ji Hye Park and the face of the brand, Lara Stone, in several styles,” said a Calvin Klein spokeswoman in a statement. “The Perfectly Fit line was created to celebrate and cater to the needs of different women, and these images are intended to communicate that our new line is more inclusive and available in several silhouettes in an extensive range of sizes.”
