Coffee Recalled For Improper Drug Contents

| by Alex Scarr

Bestherbs Coffee LLC is recalling all packages of its New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee due to undisclosed ingredients, one of which is an ingredient found in erectile dysfunction drugs.

Bestherbs ordered the recall after an FDA laboratory found New of Kopi coffee to contain desmethyl carbodenafil, a compound with a similar structure to the active ingredient in erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, according to Food Safety News. The compound can interfere with nitrates taken as heart medication, leading to potentially life-threatening drops in blood pressure.

The coffee maker also failed to disclose the presence of milk, an FDA requirement. Milk is not listed on its active ingredient list and is not mentioned anywhere on the package. Consumers who are allergic to milk and who used the product are at risk for illness.

New of Kopi coffee is marketed as a male-enhancement supplement. Packages contain 25 individual 13-grams servings.

According to a press release from Bestherbs obtained by KCTV, the coffee was distributed from July 2014 until June 2016. It was made available nationwide throughout specialty grocery stores as well as online. No illnesses were reported in relation to the recalled coffee.

The recall comes nearly a year after the FDA released a warning about New of Kopi coffee, saying it contains an unlisted ingredient that may interfere with heart medication.

"This notification is to inform the public of a growing trend of dietary supplements or conventional foods with hidden drugs and chemicals," reads a footnote statement from the FDA. "These products are typically promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, and body building and are often represented as being 'all natural.'"

The FDA's official website also contains an archive of recalled products as well as an updated list of the most recent recalls. The FDA works with industry officials to write press releases updating the public about recalled products that pose a "significant or serious risk to the consumer or user of the product."

The FDA posts recall lists for drugs, animal care products, cosmetics, biologics and medical devices on its official website.

Bestherbs Coffee said in its official release that it is notifying customers of the recall by phone and that any questions or concerns customers may have should be directed to the phone number and email address listed in the release.

Those suffering from adverse reactions to the product are encouraged to report their issue to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Reaction program.
