A new trend in plastic surgery is the upper arm lift, as it takes away excess skin from aging or weight loss.

Though it has been a procedure for sometime, it did not see a rise until the years between 2000 and 2012.

According to reports from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 15,000 upper arm lifts were performed during that time in the United States. This is up from just 300 in the year 2000.

It is not known why more people are getting arm lifts, but Dr. David Reath, a plastic surgeon in Knoxville, Tenn., said it may be due to people losing a lot of weight.

"When people are successful with weight loss - either through surgery, or with diet and exercise - they can end up with excess skin on their arms," he said.

Reath said the first procedure people want once they lose a lot of weight is a tummy tuck, but after that, they want an arm lift.

He also believes famous people, including Michelle Obama, had an influence on the increase in the procedure.

Normally, an arm lift costs between $6,000 and $8,000. A major downside to the procedure is the scar it creates on the upper arm.

Other surgeries, like butt lifts and buttock implants, saw a drop between 2011 and 2012.

"I think the past few years, there was a lot of excitement and interest in those procedures, and now it's settling down," Reath said.

Men in all age groups had an increase in chest reduction surgeries. The most common surgical procedure performed in 2012 was breast augmentation, but that has dropped 7 percent since 2011. In 2012, there were around 286,000 breast augmentations performed.

Liposuction also saw a drop last year.
