Alabama 'Personhood' Proposal Could Ban Abortion

| by Michael Allen

Alabama lawmakers are considering a proposal that would declare "personhood" on a fetus at fertilization and could effectively outlaw abortion.

If the state House and Senate vote for this bill, then state residents would vote on a constitutional amendment in November, noted The Associated Press.

Republican state Rep. Ed Henry, who proposed the bill, told the state's House Health Committee in March: "To me, science makes it clear that [life] begins at fertilization."

"I would hope we will be equally as passionate about the 550,000 children on Medicaid," Democratic state Rep. John Knight countered. "We've got to be passionate about taking care of the children who are here, and I don't see that same passion."

Dr. Jim Belyeu, an OB/GYN who supports the bill, told the committee that a fetus is "totally separate" from the mother. "The mother only contributes the egg and the incubator," he added.

Brock Boone, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union, said that the bill is an "attack on women," would ban abortion for victims of rape and incest, and might deem some types of birth control to be the "legal equivalent of homicide."

Evangelist Franklin Graham wrote about the bill on Facebook on April 14: "I pray that this state will recognize a fetus as a person—because, legally defined as such or not, a fetus is a person, created by God. The Bible says, 'For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb' (Psalm 139:13)."

The Bible never actually mentions the act of abortion, but does support certain instances of ending a pregnancy, sometimes violently, noted the Unreasonable Faith blog in 2009:

"'Give them, O LORD–what will You give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.' (Hosea 9:14)"

"'The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open.' (Hosea 13:16)"
