Police: 10-Month-Old Baby Hospitalized After Uncle Allegedly Mixed Alcohol Into Formula

| by Jared Keever

An Alabama man has been charged with child abuse after a 10-month-old baby he was caring for was admitted to a local hospital’s intensive care unit and hospital staff reportedly determined the baby had ingested alcohol.

Police from the city of Dothan have charged 19-year-old Dontavian Lee McCree with torture and willful abuse of a child, Al.com reports.

Charges came after staff at Flowers Hospital notified police of the baby’s condition Thursday afternoon.

Dothan Police Investigator Cpl. Sean Morgan said McCree is the brother of the baby’s mom and he had been caring for the child since 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

“The mother had to go to work, and he was the babysitter,” Morgan told the Dothan Eagle. “The mother was at work and when she came home from work she noticed the baby wasn’t acting normal.”

He added that the mother took her daughter to the hospital.

Morgan told the paper that the police investigation indicated an unknown type of alcohol had been mixed in with the baby’s formula, though it is still unclear why or how that happened.

“There was no debate about [McCree] mixing it and all,” Morgan said. “He was freely admitting he was the one who mixed the baby bottle and he was the only one there. Everything else came down to intent.”

McCree was booked into the Houston County Jail on $15,000 bond. He is not currently listed as an inmate on the jail’s website.

If convicted of the class C felony, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

The Associated Press reported trying to contact McCree’s attorney but a phone call and email were not immediately returned.

Morgan told the Eagle that the baby’s condition had improved by Friday.
