The media frenzy surrounding Amy Winehouse’s death was predictable; she was a larger than life figure who lived her ups and downs in the glare of an often unforgiving press. But even a life as full of intrigue as Amy’s will run out of print worthy stories eventually. Which is when the 'little or no evidence' file starts to get a good airing. Oh, that's now, by the way.
In the past few days, we’ve heard how Amy was due to adopt a little girl from St Lucia, how Amy’s death gave cyber criminals a 30 per cent boost (somehow…), and now that she was secretly engaged to on-off boyfriend Reg Traviss. The Sun broke the engagement story today, backed up by (you guessed it) a ‘source’ who said:
"Reg asked Amy and of course she said 'Yes'. She loved him. She wanted nothing more than to be his wife and to start a family with him. She wanted to get rid of her demons so badly.
"They openly said they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. They both thought the absolute world of each other."
Now, we don’t know whether this is true or not. What we do know is that Reg himself has said only “I've lost my darling who I loved very much” and has not made any mention of a secret engagement. We also know that this concerns nobody but Amy’s family and Reg, and that endlessly speculating over their relationship isn't really going to get anyone anywhere.
Amy’s family has not yet commented on this story, but her rep has denied the adoption rumours. Maybe Lady Gaga will make a comment? Despite never having met Winehouse, Gaga stated this week that she was struck silent for 48 hours following Winehouse’s death. We’re saying nothing.
