U.S. Consumes 80 Percent of World's Pain Pills

According to congressional testimony by the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, Americans consume 80 percent of opiate painkillers produced in the world.

This number is a 600 percent increase over the past ten years.

The BBC reports that is enough drugs to give every American 64 Percocets or Vicodin. Prescription drug abuse leads to 14,800 deaths a year, more than the illegal drugs heroin and cocaine combined.

Across the U.S., police report increases in crimes by people who are addicted to oxycodone and hydrocodone, the key ingredient in most prescription pain pills.
