Anti-drug Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) admitted during an interview with BuzzFeed that he smoked weed when he was younger.
John Stanton, the interviewer for the BuzzFeed Brews event, told Portman he’d been looking at pictures of the Senator from the 1970s and '80s, and commented that his long, flowing hairstyle made him look like a “dirty hippie.”
This, Stanton said, begs the question of whether the Senator had ever smoked weed.
"Uhh, yes," Portman said after a bit of a pause. “I think I've been asked that now, in 20 years, three times."
Popular VideoThis young teenage singer was shocked when Keith Urban invited her on stage at his concert. A few moments later, he made her wildest dreams come true.
Portman, now 57, has since cleaned up his act from his young and crazy years and is a big supporter of anti-drug campaigns.
Back in 1996, when Portman was a congressman, he began the “Coalition for a Drug-Free Greater Cincinnati,” which is an initiative that focused on making drug issues more locally focused. Each neighborhood has its own set of drug-related issues that are likely best tackled with a local, rather than national, agenda in mind.
Lately, the Senator is focusing on cracking down on synthetic drugs, such as K2, Spice, or bath salts. Portman led legislation aimed at changing the Controlled Substances Act to include these synthetic drugs after a few bizarre incidents in 2012, one of which involved a Miami man high on bath salts who chewed off the face of a homeless man.
Portman has expressed regret before about his past drug use, explaining to the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 2005 that he regretted ever using marijuana.
