A North Carolina student died on Thursday after she collapsed during her cross-country practice.

Allison Brown, 14, collapsed in the morning hours of Thursday during her cross-country practice, ABC 13 News Now reported (video below). She was an incoming freshman at Southern Guilford High School in Guilford County, North Carolina, according to the school’s spokesperson Nora Murray.

She had been running with 15 other students when the collapse occurred. She had reportedly run roughly 3 miles before she collapsed.

Emergency medical officials responded to a report of her collapsing at around 9:15 a.m. When they arrived, Brown was rushed to the Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she was eventually declared dead.

Her cause of death has not yet been released.

Principal Debbie Kraszenski says she was “deeply saddened by the loss of Allison Brown.”

“The community is very strong and we`ve been in touch with family and friends and students and parents," she said on Thursday afternoon, according to My Fox 8. "We`re reaching out to everybody as often as much as we can.”

Kraszenski also spoke with ABC 13 News Now, saying that the community will "work together" to support each other.

She added that the girl had an up-to-date physical. The weather the day she collapsed also met the state’s requirements for outdoor practices.

Grief counselors will be present at the school on Friday to help anyone dealing with grief from the loss.
