Governor Brewer Signs Arizona Constitutional Carry into Law

Friday, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) signed an important NRA-backed bill into law, which removes the licensure requirement for law-abiding citizens who choose to carry a concealed firearm in the state of Arizona. Senate Bill 1108 passed the state House on April 8, by a vote of 36-19 with five absent votes and the state Senate by a vote of 20-10 in late March.

“This is a major victory for gun owners in Arizona, and I would like to thank Governor Jan Brewer, as well as the primary bill sponsor, Senator Russell Pearce (R-Mesa), for their leadership in working to improve the self-defense rights of law-abiding citizens in Arizona," said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA-ILA. “Both Governor Brewer and state Senator Pearce have been strong supporters of the NRA. The NRA is also grateful to the legislators who voted for this measure making Arizona the third state in the nation behind Vermont and Alaska to offer its residents a constitutional carry option."

SB 1108 replaces Arizona’s former law, which required anyone who wished to defend themselves outside their home to possess a state-issued concealed carry permit. In Arizona’s constitution, Article 2, Section 26 states "the right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself or the state shall not be impaired…" The intention of this language could not be clearer.

Arizona residents will still be required to obtain a permit to carry concealed firearms across state lines in those states that have reciprocity agreements with Arizona.

"SB 1108 will enhance the rights of law-abiding Arizonans," concluded Cox.

The effective date for this bill has yet to be determined.

I like it.

Obama does not believe in the U.S. Constitution therefore has no problem ignoring it.

Historically speaking, Congress has passed more unconstitutional laws than we can possibly fight in the courts.

Just at the time that Obama is trying to revoke our right to own guns . There is a process going on now where Obama is planning on signing an international treaty that bans any business to sell a gun to a citizen, and no citizen may sell a firearm to another citizen. That's a perfect start to shattering our rights. Plus, he's raising the taxes massively on firearms and ammo to dissuade anyone from buying them.

My question....how can Obama possibly believe that an international treaty somehow nullifies our Constitution? I would think that it would be illegal for a President to sign any treaty that violates our rights in the Constitution. But, there it is. He has to have 2/3 of the Senate to pass it, though, and that's not gonna happen.

Since when has Obama respected any part of the Constitution that's inconvenient for him?

I agree, the treaty would be on its face illegal, but it would be very dangerous as well. Consider this quote:

"When you come for my guns , you'd better bring yours. You'll be needing them." Larry Simoneaux

The SCOTUS has already determined that the Second Amendment can not be removed. An international treaty being signed is one thing but Congress and the Senate would no doubt raise a fuss. There are members of both political parties that would fight such efforts to destroy the gun rights of the American people.

I've heard these rumors as well, though until we no longer have the checks and balances maintained by the Supreme Court, Congress, the Senate, and last but not least the millions of armed citizens, the UN Gun Ban will not become a reality.

It's reassuring to hear someone with confidence not seeing the possibility, but Obama tries to work around our Constitution every chance he gets.

Our gun rights were not given to us for hunting or for protection against Jesse James (as the libs say the rights were for the way society was at the time). Our founding fathers avoided a democracy because democracies have always failed. They knew the danger of a tyrany and they gave the people the power to protect ourselves from our own government and to prevent such a disaster.

Liberals just don't get that, and they believe Obama's intentions are good ones. I don't believe that at all. You remove the ability of the people to protect themselves and it is a cakewalk for tyrany. Looking at how Obama and the libs are forcefully overtaking so much of our society, I don't trust this man any further than I can throw fat Albert.

I consider myself more liberal than conservative. I only really sound conservative because I am pro-gun and think in terms of limited government . I could care less what god a person worships and feel that such traditions are nonsense anyway.

I think we should have virtually no restrictions on our civil liberties and should only live with basic morals. Don't lie, don't cheat, don't steal, don't harm, don't kill. Of course it's all a bit more complicated than that, but I am totally into more freedom , liberty, and diversity.

I am conservative but I am not religious. I'm not an athiest....I just don't think we were meant to know. I don't care what religions someone has as long as it does not interfere of force itself over the rights of others.

All of these big government changes are only serving to give the politicians more power, while taking power away from the states and from us.

I believe the federal government should be very limited in size, and the states should retain the majority of power and make their own decisions. Welfare should be very limited. ( I am all for helping people in need, but when welfare recipients can make three times more from benefits , foodstamps, health care , cash, bills payments, and whatever than they can if they went to work , there is no incentive to work.)

Our government is way, way out of control. Neither party has worked for us for decades.

People have no idea how peaceful the Old West was. Crimes were relatively low when every household on a decent amount of land contributed at least one projectile weapon to its own safety.

People shouldn't rely on cowboy movies as documentaries.
