Glenn Beck to Unemployed: Work at McDonald’s

Glenn Beck has a message for long-term jobless workers: You’re a bunch of un-American losers.

Beck went on a tirade this week against workers who have been unable to find a job for 99 weeks or more and come to the end of unemployment benefits. Showing a video of a rally by jobless workers in New York, Beck frothed:

I’d bet you’d be ashamed to call them Americans….Go out and get a job. You may not love the job. Work at McDonald’s. Work two jobs….Two years is plenty of time to have lived off your neighbors’ wallet.

He went on to accuse jobless workers of being anti-capitalist and socialist. It’s hard to imagine that 21 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communism that talking heads like Beck still think there’s a red threat lurking. Worse, they making millions and billions of dollars doing so.

Unlike the 1.4 million Americans who have been out of work more than 99 weeks, and can’t feed their families.

It’s onerous to search out educated individuals on this matter, however you sound like you already know what you’re talking about! Thanks Sandpoint Real Estate Jaunt

Beck is horrible at expressing what are otherwise good ideas.

Unemployment insurance definitely prolongs unemployment - studies have shown clear correlation. But this doesn't mean those on unemployment insurance are necessarily moochers - weren't these people paying for unemployment insurance before they were laid off? Similarly, those who had a car accident and filed an insurance claim aren't mooching off my premiums.

But he still misses the big picture - unemployment insurance is a small piece of the puzzle. The minimum wage has been pushed up. So have health care costs. So is McDonald's even hiring? Probably not, like most other businesses, who have had their labor costs forcefully increased and face uncertainty about future cost increases, such as carbon taxation.

The unemployed aren't moochers - they are the victims. But Uncle Sam certainly isn't their friend - they want jobs, not handouts.

Top CEOs make 600 times what their lowest-paid workers make. I haven't heard of any of them -- except one -- taking less pay and benefits in order to share the pain. My company laid off half its workers to make the bottom line look better before a stockholders meeting. Didn't help. Where once they commanded $60 a share, now they struggle to reach $6. If they realize they made a mistake and laid off someone necessary (with 30 years on the job), they hire two part-timers to fill that full-time position. Starting salary, No benefits.
Their customer service department used to emply 100 people in this city. Now it's in Manila. They ask what state you're in, then are pleased when they've heard of it.
I have applied for 165 jobs for which I am qualified or overqualified during my 18 months of unemployment. I have had two interviews, neither of which resulted in a job. I met a Ph.D. laid off from a state-supported college now working as a receptionist -- at the unemployment office.
New applicants for unemployment set a record last month, close to half a million.
The media tell us there MAY be a SLOWDOWN in the RECOVERY going on.
Oil is at $100 a barrel. There are fuel price riots in Europe, plus everything that moves by truck -- which is everything -- costs more. It's headed this way. Kuwait, whose butt we protected from Saddam in 1991, thinks their oil price is fair.
I've taken a class to take a test for certification for a job that pays $9.50 a very busy hard-working hour. I made twice that after 30 years with my company, then was laid off with NO notice.
Mean people suck.

I think he chooses to be glib rather than helpful sometimes.
I don't watch him much at all, but I HAVE seen him point out the reasons for the economic collapse, and I agree: government regs killing small business, a great generator of jobs. I saw it with my parents' business. Three people to drive the trucks, one to keep the books and do the taxes -- and one to comply with government paperwork. 20% of the company there solely to report to Uncle. A home-based business, it was forced to plant $60,000 worth of trees as a screen between it and a neighborhood that did not as yet exist. This when the owner was within five years of selling and retiring.
I almost forgot. My severance pay from the big corporation -- and lucky to get it -- was taxed as regular income. Actually, it put me in a higher bracket for that year.
The government made up for it by taxing my $13,000 unemployment benefits at only TEN PERCENT.
My unemployment benefits.
If my wife couldn't work part time and we didn't have a boarder, we'd have lost the house. Having done nothing wrong, except trust our corporate masters.

lost in MI's picture

What a jerk, he is lost and so is his future. He can then work at McDonalds. It is an insurence that we paid into, not a free ride idiot. There are at least 50 to 1 person looking or applying for the same job. Does he live in reality, do any of them. 99s have tried and keep trying to find jobs asshole. I woudl love to have a one on one with this idiot. I cannot believe he evens exist. He has no future as of now with that comment. We will see in November, who is left. You left us behind and we willdo the same to you. Do you really think that we will just go away. There are plenty of people falling the unemployment, they will also be 99s. I have worked since I was 15, now 52 asshole. There are no Freaking jobs especially in MI. Learn you rfacts beofre you speak. You even sound like a asshole when you do talk. I glad your family is eating and a roof over thier heads. Some people are losing this, because of your failure and others who did not do the right thing while in office (bank, and automotive) we have to pay for their mistakes. I hope you lose your position and eat McDonalds asswipe and your extened family also, I hope they all lose their jobs. I cannot say nough about this jerk (what a blithering blooming idiotic asshole). Out of picture he should go. A rally, disbelief that this is also happening. We should bombard his office with calls and state this. Go aheaf fax, call and keep calling. They will get the picture. BOMBARD THE IDIOT WITH CALLS AND FAXES!!!!!!!!

First, let me express my heartfelt sorrow for the fact that you can't spell and/or type worth a damn.

Next, let me explain to you that Glenn Beck is not an elected official. He's a talk show host, so explain this: "because of your failure and others who did not do the right thing while in office". How did Mr. Beck fail? By becoming a self-educated man, working harder than others in his craft, and taking advantage of his God-given talents.

What Mr. Beck is suggesting is simple. If you're without work, go get a job. Personally, I would do whatever it takes (within the bounds of legality and morality) and earn yourself some money. If you live in Michigan, pick up bottles and cans on the side of the road for 10 cents each. Work at McDonalds. Clean houses. Do whatever it takes. (Personally, I like the idea of cans and bottles, because you're helping the environment at the same time.)

The 2 or 3 times that I've been unemployed, I most certainly took advantage of the unemployment checks that I received. I took unemployment benefits for 4-6 weeks, then got a job. The reason was simple: I'd rather earn my money the real way than receive a check in the mail for doing nothing. I've washed cars, worked fast- food , and been a cashier at a convenience store. All "crap" jobs. But they paid me. Now, as I near retirement from the military, I've completed my college degree and will earn a graduate degree using my GI Bill and then find a new job. If I can't find a job within a month or so, I'll go back to Pizza Hut or some other food service job until I find more suitable employment for my talents.

That, dear friend, is what Mr. Glenn Beck is talking about. It's too bad we have people that want to get things handed to them forever.

PS - The "majority" of intelligent people would see through the web of lies that the media spins about Glenn Beck. You should try listening to him for a few weeks. It's not like you've got a job or anything.

It sure sounds like you have everything lined up to be feeding at the public trough forever. Not a bad gig I'm sure. You seem to be missing the part where a guy that has been framing houses for 20 years doesn't get to retire at half pay and go on a free ride to college when the bottom falls out of the housing market.

Here are some hard numbers for you to chew on:

http://www.census.gov/const/startsua.pdf

It's the unadjusted data on new housing starts since 1959. Homes are being built at a rate that is approximately a quarter of what it was just a few years ago. There are currently 6 people looking for work for every job that is available. News flash to you and Beck, McDonald's isn't hiring either. You're in for a rude awakening when you get back to the real world.

Get a real education !

I agree ...99 weeks is a long time to not be able to find work. But why is anyone going to get a job that pays less than what they were making? To have a job you say. Good point. But now if they get laid off they will only get pennies on the dollar. And remember that unemployment is actually an INSURANCE that each person pays into, it is not a free ride.

How about if we stop (as in GM...and others) exporting jobs. Wouldn't it be nice to call customer service and reach someone in this country?

ecuadmail's picture

So you're getting after him for name calling? Does how he says something invalidate what it said?

GO GET A JOB! Holy hell people 2 years of unemployment? Unemployment would pay me more than my job pays me but for some reason I still work. Seriously.......

First of all, extended benefits are only available in the states with very high unemployment. The last time I looked, it only applied to about half the US.

Second, it hasn't been two years since the law was passed and it has expired twice.

Third, it's a 4 tier program and not all states are eligible for all 4 tiers.

Like most of the hogwash Beck spouts, it's verifiably bogus. It probably sounds great to the morons in states with unemployment at 3.5%, plenty of employment opportunities flipping burgers, and where unemployment expires at 26 weeks. They're too stupid to know the difference, which is why Beck appeals to them in the first place.
