Georgian luge athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed at the Vancouver Olympics on Friday when he crashed during a practice run. Kumaritashvili was taken to hospital after flying off the track during a skeletal run and reportedly impacted a pole at speeds around 100 mph.
"Our first thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the athlete,'' said Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee. "The whole Olympic family is struck by this tragedy, which clearly casts a shadow over these Games.''
