Ump Robs Detroit Tigers' Armando Galarraga of Perfect Game in the 9th

| by Off The Record

Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga made his first start tonight in place of Dontrelle Willis, who was traded to the Diamondbacks yesterday. All he was able to do against the Cleveland Indians was throw a perfect game through 8 2/3.

Then came Jason Donald, who was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies in the Cliff Lee deal last year. He hit a ground ball in the hole on the right side and Miguel Cabrera fielded the ball and threw it to Galarraga, who was covering first base.

He appeared to have the final out and the perfect game, but the umpire thought otherwise. He called Donald safe and apparently blew the call. For any Detroit fans that want to send the umpire a Christmas card, his name is Jim Joyce.

Galarrage then got Trevor Crowe to ground out to end the game. Wow.

We feel terrible for Galarraga. Some guys pitch forever and never even get through five innings being perfect. To get to the final out only to have the umpire miss a call at first? Ouch.

Shouldn’t the tie go to the guy with the perfect game and not the runner?
