As a boxing fan, it would be hard to argue that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a very talented boxer. Tonight, he will have an opportunity to back up his talk as he faces an elite welterweight champion in Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
“I got respect for Sugar Ray Robinson. I’ve got respect for Muhammad Ali,” Mayweather said. “But I’m a man just like they’re men. I put on my pants just like they put on their pants. What makes them any better than I am? Because they fought a thousand fights? In my era, it’s totally different, you know? It’s pay-per-view now, so things change. It’s out with the old and in with the new. Things change.
“Like I said, Muhammad Ali is one hell of a fighter. But Floyd Mayweather is the best. Sugar Ray Robinson is one hell of a fighter, but Floyd Mayweather is the best.”
Boxing fans have been critical of all of Mayweather’s talk due to a lack of quality opponents he has faced. However, he says that his fights look lopsided because he is really that good. He did have a bout scheduled with Manny Pacquiao, but this never transpired. He now faces Mosley (46-5) in what could be a defining moment in his career and Mosley believes he will be the best that Mayweather has ever faced.
Popular VideoThis young teenage singer was shocked when Keith Urban invited her on stage at his concert. A few moments later, he made her wildest dreams come true.
“As a welterweight, he hasn’t fought another top welterweight, and I’m the first one that’s he fought … so it makes the fight a big fight,” said Mosley. “All the other guys have not really been the best, if you will. There are a lot of great welterweights out there that he could have chosen to fight instead of fighting the ones that he fought.”
Mosley will be getting back into the ring tonight for the first time since January 2009 when he defeated Antonio Margarito by knockout in the ninth round. Throughout the years, Mayweather has really never expressed any interest in facing Mosley, but after the Pacquiao fight failed to take place, he really had no choice due to the lack of big-name fighters available. Mosley is happy that Mayweather finally stepped up to the plate.
“I definitely have to give him props for jumping in the ring with me and making this fight happen,” Mosley said. “It’s a big fight, and he stepped up and took it. Maybe I didn’t get as much as I should have gotten, but I got a lot and it’s good enough for me.”
All of the previous exchanging of words between these two fighters will finally culminate tonight in the ring. Boxing sportsbooks have Mayweather as a -425 favorite in the fight and Mosley will assume the underdog role at +300.
