A fight that most boxing fans feel should have taken place a lot sooner is set for May 1, 2010 as Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley will square off at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. This bout will feature two of the top three welterweight fighters. This fight is important for both fighters, but a win by Mayweather could land him a shot at Manny Pacquiao.
Mayweather (40-0) probably has more on the line in this fight than Mosley. Some critics say that he has avoided top competition throughout his career. He does have some notable wins in his last few fights with Oscar De LaHoya and Juan Manuel Marquez, but Mosley has the hand speed that Mayweather has not seen since his fight with Zab Judah in 2006. Mosley hasn’t fought in 15 months so he should come into the bout in great shape, despite being 39 years old. Mayweather does not get off to the fastest of starts and coming out of the gates firing could be key for Mosley.
Mosley (46-5) is 4-1 in his last five fights. His only loss during this span was to Miguel Cotto by a unanimous decision. The question concerning Mosley is how he will respond after such a long layoff. Will the layoff show just how old he is or will the 15 months off allow him to get into the best shape of his life. On the flip side though, Mayweather has not been much more active in the ring and by the time of this fight, he will have fought just once in the last 29 months, that being against Marquez.
Boxing sportsbooks have a couple of great options for sports bettors regarding the Mayweather/Mosley bout on May 1. Mayweather is the obvious clear favorite in this fight with a payout set at -450, while Mosley is at +300. The over/under on rounds is set at 11 1/2 with the over at -365 and the under at +285.

If Mayweather can avoid an upset it could set up another fight with Pacquiao. The first was never finalized due to differences on drug testing. Instead, Pacquiao got Joshua Clottey which he defeated back in March. Pacquiao has stated he wants his shot at Mayweather, but a loss to Mosley by Mayweather could hinder this much anticipated bout between the two.
