Floyd Mayweather a Bigger PPV Draw than Manny Pacquiao

It’s long since been argued by boxing experts that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is far more important to the sport of boxing than Manny Pacquiao. While the latter no doubt carries a rabid international fan base that makes its presence known on online message boards, the former has the stats and dollar amounts backing his impact up.

It appears as though Pacquiao’s boring, vanilla-like personality coupled with his tendency to fight weak opponents simply to build up his record hasn’t translated into much appeal with the casual sports fan.

According to a list of the top 10 pay-per-views released for 2010, Mayweather edged out the eight division paper champ for the distinction of “top seller.” With a total of 1.4 million buys for the Mayweather-Shane Mosley fight, the real people’s champ showed yet again why he is the biggest draw in the sport.

And, if that wasn’t enough, he also showed why Pacquiao would be the real winner if he ultimately stopped looking for empty public relations wins and actually agreed to a fight with Mayweather.

Pacquiao, who by default has become the face of boxing while Mayweather deals with some unfortunate personal matters, had two fights on the list. However, with 1,150,000 buys for his ridiculous bout with known cheater Antonio Margarito, and only 700,000 for his waste-of-time fight against Joshua Clottey, Pacquiao couldn’t compete with Mayweather’s numbers.

It appears as though the Filipino superstar hasn’t learned his lesson, though.

With at least three quality potential fighters in front of him, Pacquiao opted to go with over-the-hill Mosley for his next match. Considering the fact that nobody thinks Mosley has any shot against his far superior opponent in Pacquiao, it wouldn’t be particularly shocking if the upcoming pay-per-view numbers proved to be the lowest yet for Pacman.

PACQUIAO vs. MOSLEY ..... 1 million + PPV

MAYWEATHER JR. vs. HARRIS, SECURITY GUARDS, SHL HOA ..... 3 million +...... in legal fees plus jail time and @zz rapin', lol.

Hey! Maybe it was Mosley who pulled in the 1.4 million. haha. I think a lot of people want to see Mayweather get beat, therefore the high numbers.

No, it's Mayweather, he got a million buys with Marquez.

It's obvious you don't know what you are talking about! If promoters knew the formula for making a cross-over star, the stars would overwhelm the sport.

The only 'proven' seller in any industry is the classic good guy vs bad guy. There are indicators like demographics but those scenario don't always work.

There are many good guy persona's or just plain good people in boxing and many fewer bad guys persona's. Use your brain and apply that to Mayweather's marketing imitation of Muhammad Ali. The average Big Title fight is lucky to draw 4,000 paying patrons at the gate. Which btw is a little under what Williams/Martinez II sold. Having a PPV of over 300,000 buys is enormous. HBO would have no problem putting on an event that sells over 100,000 PPV's. Using an oxymoron like "Only 700,000" would only be used by a bitter Mayweather persona patron that has animosity toward his arch nemesis.

Don't use numbers when insulting boxing fans in your future writings, it only displays your ignorance and understanding of the boxing profession.

The matter is who is pound for pound. In 2010 Pacman made $45m on boxing alone not included his business and other promotion like NIKE etc. Pacman is unstouchable what ever he touched grow and whatever Mayweather touch died. It is sad for Mayweather and just wait Pacman will break the PPV record because there is not that much difference Pacman is 1.2 and Mayweather is 1.4. What you are going to say then. Mayweather is a looser or another excuse for Mayweather.

MoneyMayPacMan's picture

are you kidding me? 1.4 is 200,000 more homes than 1.2. 60$ x 200000, 12 million dollars more, that is generated. lol

Hey Groberman...let's not forget that "Mr. Perfect Record" fought Mosely too....let us also not forget that the more that Mayweather ducks Manny, the less "perfect" his "perfect" record is going to become....Manny has a fighting spirit like no other, and that is the reason Mayweather is running scared..the Mayweather's are a bunch of loons, between the uncle, the father, and the son, they are really a dysfunctional group of loudmouth loons.

Listen, Mayweather fought fighters before they were shot. I am not saying Pacquiao did not fight quality opposition. He has fought many great fighters: Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera... and so on. But his most notable victories are against dehydrated De La Hoya, bashed Cotto (lost to Margarito), defeated Clottey (lost to Cotto), Mosley (lost to Mayweather, draw with Sergio Mora), Margarito (KO by Mosley)... now I'm not saying it's Pacquiao, but look at all his opponents. Mayweather though I don't like what he is doing now, has fought three undefeated opponents, and fought Mosley when he was coming off the Margarito victory.

all things being equal you would be right if boxing was only a sport in the USA and our boxing idols had no influence on the younger generation.

Boxing is a global sport, and these professionals have a responsibility that comes along with their celebrity status.

As a world champion, drug taking, wife bashing slandering competitors is irresponsible and not what is needed in the sport, on any level.

Manny Pacquiao , like many other boxers has taken the high road, and has set themselves as examples to follow so much so he is now a member of congress in the Philippines.

As an Australian who is living in Asia, it was Manny Pacquiao that drew me into being interested in boxing as he is a mentor, he has transformed beyond the sport to become a global icon.

We only see this once in a generation, what a pleasure it is to see someone who is now a beacon of hope and responsibility in countries where there is none.

WELL DONE MANNY KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !!

Sad article puffing up a fighter that don't wanna fight and dogging the class of the sport, Pacquiao!

Boxing is a business and business is good for the fighter from the East!

Mayweather is just following in the footsteps of another getto trash to riches to getto story Mike Tyson.

I wouldn't b surprised if this ghost writer was really Floyd Jr. But I don't think he got the book smarts for this trick!
